Atlanta Falcons
- Kyle Pitts participated in practice and caught 2 passes in 7-on-7s. By all accounts he looked healthy and without limitations.
- HC Arthur Smith on Desmond Ridder: “(He) has a lot of prove. We’re going to challenge him. He’s very confident, and he’s got to go out and prove it.
- Desmond Ridder had an up and down day. He was solid in the short to intermediate passes, but struggled going deep.
- Ridder on Drake London: “He’s obviously a very natural route runner. For rookies, a lot of it is mental. Now he’s getting more comfortable.”
- “Bijan Robinson taking carries at half speed is still beautiful.” He showcased his escapism on one particular play where Grady Jarrett was deep in the backfield, but Robinson managed to escape and turn it into a short gain.
- Tyler Allgeier also looked great running the football today. On one instance, he sprung for a big run.
Baltimore Ravens
- As expected, Ravens WR Rashod Bateman and RB J.K. Dobbins are not practicing on Day 1. Both remain on the PUP list.
- Not much relevant info on Day 1 of Ravens practice. Odell Beckham Jr. had a long catch and Zay Flowers had a handful of catches. The practice tempo was fast under new OC, Todd Monken
- Some Day 1 standouts: Lamar Jackson was very accurate and quick to throw, though he had an INT Zay Flowers was v active underneath, probably led team in catches Kyle Hamilton had a pick and Odafe Oweh had a would-be sack OBJ went over Rock Ya-Sin for a big catch.
- Ravens first-round pick Zay Flowers turned heads when juked Pro Bowl LB Roquan Smith in the open field. It also earned Flowers a new moniker. “His new name is joystick because of how he moves out there so swift and makes something happen,” quarterback Lamar Jackson said.
Buffalo Bills
- Stefon Diggs practiced today before sitting down with the media afterwards and answering several questions.
- Josh Allen on Trent Sherfield and Deonte Harty: “(Sherfield) can move around, Harty is our speed guy and can fill our gadget role too. Think he might have bigger role than McKenzie did we’ll see. We’re learning how our new talent best fits into our scheme.”
- More Josh Allen: “Been really impressed with James Cook. He’s been in his playbook. He’s a very focused player right now. He’s going to have a chance to make some exciting things happen in our offense this year.”
Carolina Panthers
- Bryce Young is the Panthers QB1 in case that was up for debate. He had a very nice day. He completed his first three passes of team drills. The first two went to Adam Thielen. He also had three straight off target throws. But overall, he was very sharp. He had a highlight reel throw to DJ Chark.
- Laviska Shenault got several reps in the backfield.
- HC Frank Reich on rookie WR Jonathan Mingo and his role: “He’s gonna have to earn it. Looks good so far.”
Chicago Bears
- Chase Claypool on the hopes of securing his future this season: “This is the biggest year of my life, and I understand that. If anyone thinks my work ethic isn’t matching that, they’re deeply mistaken.”
- Justin Fields had a strong first day. Very few balls hit the ground. Best play was a deep ball to DJ Moore for touchdown. Get ready to hear a lot of this during Camp. Fields is in for a huge year.
- Bears practice had to be moved inside and closed to the public due to air quality concerns.
Cincinnati Bengals
- WR Tee Higgins here at practice and participating despite no contract extension yet. Tee Higgins is entering the final year of his deal with the team. Higgins caught a long pass on the first play of team drills.
Dallas Cowboys
- Cowboys RB Tony Pollard: “I’m feeling pretty good right now, pretty much at 100 percent. At this point, it’s just on me and the trainers, communicating, being smart, not rushing anything, not getting out there and going full speed too early. Just easing back into it.”
- Ceedee Lamb was very busy as he caught several passes from Dak Prescott yesterday
- Luke Schoonmaker starts Training Camp on the Non-Football Injury list.
Denver Broncos
- HC Sean Payton on rookie WR Marvin Mims Jr., who was sidelined by a different hamstring injury than one had in the Spring: “He’ll be full probably in about four days, five days, maybe a week and it’s not the same hamstring. It’s something from a workout more recently.”
Detroit Lions
- Lions OC Ben Johnson on rookie TE Sam LaPorta: “He’s earned the right to be in that first-team huddle with Jared and that offensive line.”
- Johnson said rookie WR Antoine Green has also earned some higher-team reps so far.
- More ARSB: “The only offensive skill player who seemed to make any noise downfield was Amon-Ra St. Brown—and most of that impact was in his yards after the catch. Two times, on a quick out and a curl, St. Brown was able to find his blockers and get behind them for solid gains.”
Green Bay Packers
- “In one practice, we saw the good that Luke Musgrave can bring to this offense, and also where he needs to improve. On a play down the sidelines, Musgrave had (a CB) beat by a few steps. On another, where he was a blocker, Preston Smith ran right past him for a would-be sack.”
- It was a so-so day for Jordan Love. It was very windy, so take it with a grain of salt. Several of his deep passes came up short and he was 7/14 overall.
- Romeo Doubs was the best WR on the field yesterday
Houston Texans
- Nick Caserio says WR John Metchie III has been cleared and is “ready to go” for training camp
- CJ Stroud started the day with the first team, but did split reps with Davis Mills. It’s only a matter of time before Stroud is commanding the first team full time.
- The Texans defense dominated the Texans offense. There weren’t many completions. CJ Stroud had 2 deep shots to Tank Dell and Noah Brown but both fell incomplete. Davis Mills had a nice rollout throw to the sideline for Robert Woods. But Woods dropped it
- Stroud did have one nice deep ball to Nico Collins
- Growing pains are expected for the youthful Texans
Indianapolis Colts
- GM Chris Ballard on Anthony Richardson: “He had a good offseason. He’s a young player in this league. We look forward to seeing him compete. Tomorrow is his first day and now we get rolling. He’s done the work and he’s a great kid.”
- Richardson completed first 11-on-11 throw, which was a little flare to Evan Hull. He finished 11-on-11 drills 2/2 with a passing TD to Ethan Fernea and a rushing TD.
- Gardner Minshew took all of first-team reps today. He finished 4/4 with a TD in 11-on-11 work
Jacksonville Jaguars
- Calvin Ridley: Back. Ridley stood out from the rest in the Jaguars first practice of Camp. Great to see him back on the field.
- Check out how much faster Ridley runs this route compared to Zay Jones
Kansas City Chiefs
- Patrick Mahomes had a nice 15-20 yard pass that he floated to Justyn Ross. Ross continues to impress at Chiefs Camp.
Miami Dolphins
- Although Tyreek Hill reached a settlement in his marina incident, the NFL is still looking into the incident, Mike McDaniel said.
- Highlight of the day was a 40-plus yard completion from Tua Tagovailoa to Jaylen Waddle.
- “Salvon Ahmed had a strong showing at the Dolphins’ first practice. Big gains both on the ground and through the air. De’Von Achane also had an active day.”
New England Patriots
- “However, this spring it was Demario ‘Pop’ Douglas who looked like he could impact the offense more than any rookie receiver. Douglas saw some time w/ the Pats projected starters. He was used in a variety of quick-pass play & could even be used in jet sweeps & end arounds.”
- “Looks like Demario Douglas is ahead of Kayshon Boutte early on. Douglas spent some time early on with Mac Jones, DeVante Parker, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Rhamondre Stevenson, Hunter Henry, Mike Gesicki, Kendrick Bourne, Tyquan Thornton and Pierre Strong.”
- The Patriots offense had an all around awful day. Granted, they mostly did Red Zone work. Mac Jones was picked off on his first full-speed drill.
- Ty Montgomery was the lone bright spot today: “Ty Montgomery picked up where he left off last summer before getting hurt, and was one of the most-targeted players in practice. He caught multiple touchdowns, lining up as both a running back and wide receiver. During team drills, he spent most of his time with the receivers.”
- Kevin Harris and Pierre Strong took snaps behind Rhamondre Stevenson for stretches. Ty Montgomery continues to produce (2 TDs from Mac) and will factor into RB/WR picture. Joe Judge led special teams. Tons more stats, studs, duds, breakdowns and observations coming!
New Orleans Saints
- “(Alvin Kamara) looks fast and explosive. He looks like himself… Kamara had two really good plays. During a play-action period, he took a handoff to the outside and got to the edge, then he had a pretty good gain on a delayed screen where he took the ball up the hash.”
- Derrick Carr has show great command of the offense thus far.
New York Giants
- Joe Schoen said he never had any discussion with teams about trading Saquon Barkley.
- It was the Darren Waller show at Giants Camp. Waller made several catches, especially in Red Zone work. He was “uncoverable”.
- Daniel Jones hit Parris Campbell for a touchdown, which prompted one beat writer to say “I think Campbell could end up being a sneaky-good signing. Lot of upside and talent. He just needs to stay healthy.”
- Daniel Jones was 3/4 with 2 TD’s in 11 on 11 Redzone drills.
- Giants Training Camp Day 1 thoughts: Darren Waller is nasty and targeted a ton in RZ drills. Lots of 12 personel & Daniel Bellinger looked good in it. Lots of RB motion & also Parris Campbell & Waller motioned into backfield. Cole Beasley getting lots of 1st team reps.
- Giants rookie WR Jalin Hyatt left practice early Wednesday He walked off the field with trainers late in the day. He left practice for “heat-related” reasons, according to a sources and is fine.
New York Jets
- Aaron Rodgers has been a bit off in 7 on 7. Good coverage by the DBs (especially DJ Reed and Michael Carter) but he’s 1/4 to start out.
- In a 7v7 drill., Aaron Rodgers begins it with a beauty of an anticipation hookup with Corey Davis, 8-12 yards and potential YAC if he beats the CB. —Next play falls incomplete, but it was a positive QB throw. He saw 1v1 and placed it in the perfect spot (back shoulder), which allowed Garrett Wilson a chance. Got one hand on it.
Philadelphia Eagles
- Cliff notes version of Nick Sirianni/Howie Roseman presser: The Eagles are healthy entering camp with every player passing the conditioning test. RB will start off as by-committee. Jalen Hurts protection conversation same as always.
- Jalen Hurts “sacked” on first two plays of 11 on 11 . He then threw a dart to Dallas Goedert in red zone 7 on 7 for a TD while rolling left. Hurts was impressive overall, picking up where he left off last year.
- Trey Sermon is having a good day. Going to be really tough to cut him.
- Not a good day for Marcus Mariota. A few bad throws. A fumble (which rarely happens in training camp). Not many nice throws
San Francisco 49ers
- Quick takeaways from first scrimmage period: Trey Lance/Sam Darnold splitting QB1 reps. Jordan Mason/Elijah Mitchell splitting RB1 reps. McCaffrey not in team drills.
- The only good play of the first scrimmage: A nice find from Trey Lance to Ty Davis-Price on a wheel route with pressure coming. Good catch in stride by TDP.
- Looked like Trey Lance just dropped a perfect bucket pass over the DB for Danny Gray. Couldn’t get two feet in near sideline.
- TDP on somethin today… Burst showing, as well as elusiveness. Without pads, but a good early sign.
- The 49ers have an abundance of running backs.
Seattle Seahawks
- Seahawks put 6 guys on active/PUP: safety Jamal Adams, linebacker Jordyn Brooks, tight end Noah Fant, nose tackle Austin Faoliu, nose tackle Bryan Mone and cornerback Riq Woolen.
- JSN hype
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
- QBs taking snaps from the centers while Dave Canales coaches them. They all rotated so Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask both worked with Ryan Jensen.
- Chris Godwin says both Kyle Trask and Baker Mayfield were confident in their command of the offense and on time with their throws today.
- “Bucs quarterback Kyle Trask had his best practice since he was drafted by the Bucs. Not probably. Definitely. He looked like a legit NFL quarterback. He’ll need to string many more of those together to secure the starting job”
- Expect a lot more movement from the Bucs quarterbacks this year vs last year. Lot of bootlegs, rollouts and waggles in this new offense. Kyle Trask worked really hard last year to improve his body composition and overall athleticism so this change hasn’t been too demanding on him
- WR Mike Evans getting his work in as he begins his 10th NFL training camp. Catches a pass from Kyle Trask here.
- WR Chris Godwin says he’s excited to be in great health coming into this season after last year, when he was coming back from his knee injury, was an exercise in perseverance.
Tennessee Titans
- Ryan Tannehill: 9/10 passing, Malik Willis: 6/8 with some nice runs, Will Levis: 6/6 “It was an all-around good day for the QBs.” “Kyle Philips made a number of nice catches, and he seems poised to remind everyone of his potential.”
Washington Commanders
- Howell starts 7-on-7 drills with a strike to Dotson. Defense seem to think they got a fumble but the play was clearly over. And Howell follows up the pass to Dotson with a rainbow to Gibson.
- Really nice throw and catch from Howell to McLaurin, who had Forbes all over him.
- Sam Howell calls it’s a blessing to have this opportunity but knows how much hard work is ahead of him. Says he’s ready to execute any RPO work that comes with Eric Bieniemy’s offense. “I love that type of stuff.” Ran a ton of RPO in college at Carolina.
- Wow what a catch from BRob to start team drills. Made an over the shoulder grab near the sideline with near perfect ball placement from Howell.
- Antonio Gibson anticipates being in the “JD [McKissic] role” this year, contributing on third downs and end-of-half situations.
- Antonio Gibson: “The potential is crazy… I’ve been excited to see how we put it together. We’ve got a nice core. I’m really excited. It’s going to be nice.”
- Sam Howell’s arm strength was notable
