Training Camp Summary for Wednesday, August 2nd, 2023

August 7, 2023

The Top 10 Catches of Training Camp (thread)

Atlanta Falcons

  • Bijan Robinson had his first somewhat tough day of practice yesterday, but bounced back today. He went one-on-one with a CB (instead of an LB) on a quick out route and won with ease (video)
  • Frank Darby skying for a catch over a defender (video)
  • Desmond Ridder found Robinson on a deep crosser for a big gain. Bijan made a beautiful catch
  • DesmondRidder dime to JJ Arcega-Whiteside (video)

Baltimore Ravens

  • Lamar Jackson was sharp today, only missing one throw in the first few periods, though the bulk of his passes were short hitters
  • Ravens worked on rub routes, which is not something they’ve done in the past
  • With JK Dobbins not practicing for a week now, John Harbaugh was asked when that becomes a concern: “I don’t know. It’s a fair question. And there is a point in time when it does become a concern because  – and he knows – JK and I talked last night. We talk a lot. He wants to be out, and he needs to be out there, just like any player does. Other than that, there’s nothing else that I can really add because I don’t know when he’s gonna come back. But, I know I’m gonna be really happy when he does.”

Buffalo Bills

  • “James Cook heavily involved in pass game on Day 6…[Allen] completed 12-of-19 pass attempts through team drills. And of those 12 completions, second-year running back James Cook came down with five of them. Cook was easily the Bills’ best offensive player with the first unit, making good reads on run opportunities and then showing off his speed and hands as an outlet for Allen…Cook has continued to look like the far-and-away top back at training camp and seems destined for at least over half of the offensive snaps”

Carolina Panthers

  • Bryce Young went 11/16 in team drills
  • Terrace Marshall Jr. had a big night (video)

Chicago Bears

  • Justin Fields rolls out left and fires a sidearm pass (video)
  • The Bears offense had their worst day of camp. The defense intercepted Fields a couple times.
  • DJ Moore put on a route running clinic in one-on-ones
  • Tyler Scott might be moving ahead of Velus Jones on the depth chart, if he hasn’t already. His speed and route running have been very impressive
  • Darnell Mooney says he’s now practicing without restrictions
  • Justin Fields on the rough day for the offense: “It’s really good to actually have days like this just to see how guys respond to a little bit of adversity. I think the guys definitely had more juice at the end of practice. I just want them to have that the whole time, start off with that same juice. But just got to learn from our mistakes and continue to get better.”

Cincinnati Bengals

  • “The Bengals star WRs are playing fast, strong, explosive and should have their best season yet. Veteran Tyler Boyd has also had a good camp. There’s no reason why this trio shouldn’t be the best in football.  Chase and Higgins appear to be ready to take the next level.”

Denver Broncos

  • Javonte Williams took a scheduled off day, but still showed up to practice dressed in pads as if he was going to participate
  • Greg Dulcich is gaining some traction
  • Jerry Jeudy continues to impress in one-on-ones with his route running
  • Terrible day for Russell Wilson. He missed a wide open Jeudy and then got intercepted in back to back Red Zone plays

Detroit Lions

  • Dan Campbell says Jameson Williams has to work on his hand mechanics. “He’s just gotta grind on it,” he said. “It’ll never be probably like one of these elite pass catches that you’ve seen, but it’ll be just fine. With his speed and what he’s able to do.”
  • These are concerning words from Campbell as Williams has had a very rough start to his career.
  • Campbell went on to say that Williams will get a ton of snaps during the preseason
  • Marvin Jones made a pair of downfield plays and looked sharp in his first full team work of Camp
  • Jameson Williams with about 5 yards of separation here. Pass from Jared Goff (video)

Indianapolis Colts

  • “Alec (Pierce) has looked pretty good in camp. He’s caught a few mid to deep crossing routes that have been a nice change of pace from just throwing it deep and having him go get it. He still has that ability, but you can see he’s trying to expand his route tree.”

Jacksonville Jaguars

  • Sigh of relief as Calvin Ridley was back practicing in full after leaving practice early yesterday. He had hurt his toe due to the cleats he was wearing
  • Rough day for the offense, lots of dropped passes including one each from Ridley, Christian Kirk, and Zay Jones
  • Evan Engram did kind of save the day with back to back TDs

Kansas City Chiefs

  • Patrick Mahomes rolls left and finds MVS (video)
  • Mahomes to Justyn Ross down the field (video)
  • Andy Reid on Ross: “He’s done a nice job, had a good offseason and then he’s worked his tail off here. He just needs to keep doing that and push through it. He’s got the right mindset to do that.”
  • Mahomes on Ross: “You can tell he’s been in the offense for a year now. He’s obviously making big plays and he’s getting more involved in those first-team reps.”
  • Isiah Pacheco should be cleared for contact by the 20th of August. Hand is good, it’s the shoulder that’s left to be cleared.
  • “Deneric Prince’s name has been mentioned routinely during training camp. Today he saw some reps with Mahomes and the ones during portions of the team drill and caught a couple of check downs, while also showing good cuts, along with authority running the ball.”

Las Vegas Raiders

  • HC Josh McDaniels on Michael Mayer’s rough day trying to block Maxx Crosby yesterday: “It wasn’t a bad lesson…first day in pads in the National Football League and sometimes it’s a baptism…he had a great attitude yesterday about seeing the things he wasn’t doing right”
  • Hunter Renfrow ran some nasty routes in one-on-ones
  • Josh McDaniels on rookie receiver Tre Tucker: “Very mature guy. Very bright… He’s a very good fit relative to our group and he learns quickly.”
  • Zamir White continued to look good
  • “With Josh Jacobs still away from the team, Zamir White and Abdullah split time as the starting running back. White took most of the carries and Abdullah was called upon more in pass-catching situations. The Raiders are expected to take a by-committee approach to the position as long as Jacobs remains unsigned, but, ideally, White will be able to separate himself.”

Minnesota Vikings

  • HC Kevin O’Connell on Jordan Addison: “He’s off to a really good start… what he’s done on the grass so far has confirmed a lot of the things that we expected from Jordan. He’s also done some things instinctively just playing football within the confines of our scheme… he’s showing a willingness to be a blocker, he’s showing understanding of how he fits within the scheme and the rhythm and timing of the QB in the pass game. I’m really excited about him.”
  • Kirk Cousins on how a young or new receiver can earn his trust early on: “I want to see greatness at the catch point”

New England Patriots

  • Mac Jones and the offense FINALLY had a good day on Wednesday. In fact, it was a great day for the offense.
  • Despite the great day for the offense, Tyquan Thornton continued his quiet Camp. He had to leave practice early and went to the rehab field.
  • Another day, another highlight from Demario Douglas. He owned 1-on-1s
  • Kayshon Boutte finally showed some life on Wednesday and had a good practice and told reporters that he’s gaining confidence
  • Jones had a stretch with three-straight completions in 11s: Stick route to Hunter Henry, out to Henry, and a double dig route concept leads to a JuJu Smith-Schuster catch.
  • Hunter Henry and Juju Smith-Schuster are the top targets thus far in Camp.
  • DeVante Parker had a nice TD catch where he high-pointed the ball
  • The coaches are really taking it easy with Rhamondre Stevenson. When asked about his lack of participation, Stevenson said “honestly, you’ve got to ask Bill Belichick why I’m not practicing.”

New Orleans Saints

Pittsburgh Steelers

  • Calvin Austin’s name has popped up a few times during Camp and he made another big play today
  • George Pickens had an OPI in practice and had to be calmed down
  • Diontae Johnson made a helluva catch on the sideline (video)

Philadelphia Eagles

  • Dallas Goedert has been involved in pretty much every practice. He caught a quick hitter down the seam for a nice gain, and he got open on an out route for a reception. Christian Elliss was in coverage on both plays, but really nobody has been able to cover Goedert so far.”

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

  • “While Mayfield may have been the early favorite because of his experience in the NFL and his familiarity with Dave Canales’ style of offense, Trask has made strides & closed the gap in the last few days. What he lacks in experience, he’s made up for by being decisive and not turning the ball over.”
  • Mayfield has thrown 5 INTs, Trask has thrown only 1
  • HIGHLIGHT: Deven Thompkins catching an underthrown pass from Baker Mayfield between two defenders (video)

Tennessee Titans

  • DeAndre Hopkins can still make plays.. Hopkins has regularly come down with the ball even when well defended, and there have been stretches where he’s offered big reminders of why he’s been one of the league’s best receivers over the past decade.”
