Training Camp Nuggets – 8/16/22

August 7, 2023

Stock up

New England

Rhamondre Stevenson – Stevenson is looking to fill the James White role in this new offense and he’s drawing positive reports out of camp after stating that he’s worked hard on his passing catching abilities.

“Belichick on Rhamondre Stevenson: ‘Rhamondre has done a real good job improving his pass-game skills.’ Emphasizes that he likes what he’s seen from Stevenson as a pass-protector in Year 2.”

https://twitter.com/PhilAPerry/status/1559536408158785537

Ty Montgomery – speaking of the James White role, Ty Montgomery has continued to be praised for his versatility lining up both as a WR and RB in this new Patriots offense.

“One other note: when the #Patriots starting offense went into hurry up mode, Ty Montgomery was once again the RB on the field. Was left open down the right sideline for a big gain and caught a check down on the drive. His versatility to line up at WR is an added bonus.”

https://twitter.com/ezlazar/status/1559588425119956994

“Ty Montgomery starts the 2-minute drill in the ‘James White role,’ splits out, and promptly hauls in a 20-yard gain.”

https://twitter.com/ByChrisMason/status/1559571969082904576

New Orleans Saints

Michael Thomas – is the old Michael Thomas finally back? The drumbeat from the beat reporters is that he is having a strong camp and looks like his old self.

“Mike Thomas is still getting open against the Packers…”

https://twitter.com/nick_underhill/status/1559575369610629124

New York Jets

Joe Flacco – Flacco looks primed to start week 1 against the Ravens and it looks like from the results from practice today that he may have some juice left in that veteran arm.

“Joe Flacco today: 14 of 17, 4 TD, sacked twice. One of the offenses best days of training camp.”

https://twitter.com/ZackBlatt/status/1559572876407279617

“Flacco with one of the best throws of camp, a laser to Moore on a deep out-cut. Big-boy throw.”

https://twitter.com/RichCimini/status/1559570176303333378

“‘Joe Flacco is all but assured to be the Week 1 starter,’ says one #Jets’ team source.”

https://twitter.com/Schultz_Report/status/1559624656025444355

Philadelphia Eagles

Jalen Hurts – Hurts looked good throwing early and often in the preseason and he had a hot day at camp today throwing 5 touchdown passes.

“Jalen Hurts Training Camp Stats Day 12:

14/20, 5 TD, 0 INT

Made some really nice throws. The AJ TD was a special throw. He definitely gets an A for today”

https://twitter.com/EliotShorrParks/status/1559563157483528193

Dallas Goedert – Goedert and Hurts had a connection down the stretch last year and that should continue this year. Goedert may lose volume due to the arrival of AJ Brown but should be more efficient with his looks this year because of the attention AJ Brown will command.

“Jalen Hurts to Dallas Goedert has been a real active connection today.”

https://twitter.com/BrandonGowton/status/1559554743546122240

DeVonta Smith – Smith is back at practice and it didn’t take him long to remind us why he was such a highly touted prospect last year. This Eagles offense should be a fun one for fantasy this year.

“It’s the DeVonta Smith show again today in south Philly. He hauls in another pretty reception along the left sideline. Used his body to box out McPhearson, and leaped to grab the ball from Jalen Hurts. Double coverage too.”

https://twitter.com/JCTSports/status/1559555389003366405

“Haason Reddick instantly got in the backfield to sack Hurts but he rolled left and threw the ball anyway along the left sideline to DeVonta for a contested catch, kept both feet in. Again, DeVonta is good.”

https://twitter.com/BrandonGowton/status/1559555520503095296

Jacksonville Jaguars

Trevor Lawrence – Lawrence is looking to put his rookie season behind him with his new weapons and coaching staff to help catapult him into a much better sophomore season.

“Trevor Lawrence in team drills and 7-on-7 tonight: 21-of-27 with three drops. He was sacked twice, and should’ve thrown his second pick of camp to Tyson Campbell. Best play was a deep touchdown to Marvin Jones against Campbell in 7-on-7”

https://twitter.com/_John_Shipley/status/1559351600849850370

Minnesota Vikings

Adam Thielen – Thielen should be in for a bounce-back year if he can stay healthy in this new Vikings offense alongside superstar Justin Jefferson.

“Adam Thielen looks more like his previous self, and his play is reminiscent of his most productive stretch from 2016 to 2018. After some injury-shortened seasons and limited production when healthy, this might be big news.”

Stock down

Washington Commanders

Antonio Gibson – not a good day to be Antonio Gibson on Twitter. He was a fantasy darling last year but things change quickly in the NFL. He’s had fumbling issues and is now working with special teams and the third-stringers in practice. JD McKissic is still there for third downs and the team drafted rookie RB Brian Robinson who should have a role – things are not looking good for Gibson this year.

“OC Scott Turner on RB Antonio Gibson’s fumbles: ‘You can’t waste a possession; if you fumble the ball that’s a waste of a possession. The first job is to protect the ball. It’s something that has to be fixed.’”

https://twitter.com/john_keim/status/1559581755396558850

“More Gibson observations: He’s now working with the backups, including the third team, in a two-minute drill. J.D. McKissic got the reps with the 1s. Gibson was working with first team earlier in non two-minute stuff.”

https://twitter.com/Matthew_Paras/status/1559558986852188163

“And getting some work with the third-string offense in team.”

https://twitter.com/NickiJhabvala/status/1559558616197349382

“RB Antonio Gibson is playing the slot on punt block, which I believe is a new development”

https://twitter.com/Sam4TR/status/1559555935059820547

Philadelphia Eagles

Kenneth Gainwell – Gainwell looks like he had a rough day at practice. Miles Sanders isn’t practicing today (he’s out with a minor soft tissue injury) so Gainwell has a chance to show that he’s deserving of more work in this offense.

“Kenny Gainwell with his second dropped pass so far this practice. Fumbled after the catch last practice. Eagles RB needs to make a leap in Year 2.”

https://twitter.com/Jeff_McLane/status/1559555789072777216

New York Giants

Kenny Golladay – it sounds like Golladay is having a rough camp coming off a down year. He may be more of a product of Matthew Stafford than a truly talented WR so we’ll see if Daniel Jones and this new coaching staff can get more out of him this year.

“Kenny Golladay made a couple of nice catches at the start of today’s 7 on 7. Next period, he had one target batted down, then caught but fumbled his next one. Grabbed the ball and threw it downfield in disgust. Trying to turn it up here in camp.”

https://twitter.com/PLeonardNYDN/status/1559555886103887874

New England Patriots

Kendrick Bourne – Bourne could be a cut candidate if the team is happy with the development of rookie WR Tyquan Thornton (who has been impressing in camp) – there seems to be a little bit of a logjam at the wide receiver position for the Patriots right now.

“Since catching three passes on three targets from Jones on Day 1 of camp, Bourne hasn’t notched more than one reception from New England’s QB1 in any of the last 10 competitive practices. In four of the last six, he’s posted goose eggs.”

https://twitter.com/32BeatWriters/status/1559317624441421824

Rookies

Cleveland Browns

David Bell – Bell has been a bit dinged up until this point but he’s a rookie who should perform well in the old Jarvis Landry slot role for the Browns if he can get up to speed in time for week 1.

“David Bell’s busiest day of camp to this point. There’s still time for him to catch up – and there’s certainly opportunity.”

https://twitter.com/AkronJackson/status/1559618833165570050

New England

Tyquan Thornton – another day and another positive report coming out of Patriots camp about rookie WR Tyquan Thornton. The drumbeat continues as the rookie WR continues to impress.

“Tyquan Thornton absolutely turnstiles Kalon Barnes on a corner route then lays out to make a clean diving catch of a throw from Mac Jones during 1 on 1s.”

https://twitter.com/MikeGiardi/status/1559547507209822208

Green Bay Packers

Romeo Doubs – there are a lot of moving parts in this Packers offense without it’s top star in Adams (now in Las Vegas) but Doubs continues to get positive reports out of camp.

“Romeo Doubs has seemingly passed every test the Packers have thrown at him: practice, the preseason opener and now joint practice vs. the Saints with a toe-tapping TD on an out from Aaron Rodgers.”

https://twitter.com/RobDemovsky/status/1559587730304253953

Kansas City

Isiah Pacheco – feels like I’m writing about the same players everyday, but the positive drumbeat continues for rookie sensation Isiah Pacheco who is unlikely to get left off the 53-man roster at this point.

“Isiah Pacheco in 1-on-1 drills is so impressive because he catches everything. He also has been solid in pass protection.”

https://twitter.com/ByNateTaylor/status/1559191524361097218

“Henne to Pacheco in the flats. He takes a good thud on the play but bounces off and finishes off for another 10.”

https://twitter.com/Jacobs71/status/1559553786334560260

Washington Commanders

Brian Robinson – the rookie got some work in when Gibson fumbled and was yanked from the preseason opener. He’s impressed in camp and figures to make this a muddled ambiguous backfield to start the year.

“Brian Robinson has been great, Turner said. He wasn’t perfect, but Turner was impressed with the way he ran against the Panthers”

https://twitter.com/ZachSelbyWC/status/1559578594048868359

Houston Texans

Dameon Pierce – Pierce may not be a sleeper by the time most leagues draft at the end of the month with how much praise the rookie has received this offseason. He seems to be the clear-cut most talented running back on the Texan’s roster this year.

“During #Texans team run, Dameon Pierce, stop me if you’ve heard this before, had an explosive run. How did he last to the 4th round? Somebody help me?”

https://twitter.com/Djbienaime/status/1559537910067695618

Los Angeles Rams

Kyren Williams – Williams has missed a lot of time this offseason and with Henderson and Akers also out right now the Rams could possibly be looking for some depth at the running back position.

“Kyren Williams is still working his way back from a foot injury so Sean McVay isn’t sure if he’ll play in the preseason.”

https://twitter.com/TheRamsWire/status/1559298935654694914

Pittsburgh Steelers

Kenny Pickett – Mitch Trubisky still seems to be the starter for week 1 but this is good news for the rookie as he started this offseason taking reps with the third stringers.

“Kenny Pickett is taking reps with the 1s in a two-minute drill.”

https://twitter.com/bepryor/status/1559632717624524802

Quick hitters

Green Bay Packers

Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon – both backs can have good years and with Adams gone, there seems to be plenty of targets available for both backs in this offense.

“Aaron Rodgers says he thinks 50 catches each for Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon this season is realistic. Said they need to get their best 11 on the field”

https://twitter.com/ZachHeilprin/status/1559608189095743488

Miami Dolphins

Tua Tagovailoa – this doesn’t mention Tua by name but 6 picks in one practice caught my eye as something that isn’t great for any offense.

“Dolphins QBs were intercepted 6 times on Tuesday.”

https://twitter.com/schadjoe/status/1559578255191162880

Carolina Panthers

Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold – Baker seems like the favorite to start week 1 but the Panthers are at least telling us there’s a chance Darnold still wins this job.

“Panthers QB Baker Mayfield received most of the work with the first-team offense, but I wouldn’t say he or Sam Darnold stood out today. Both QBs made some good throws near the end of practice. Darnold picked late, however.”

https://twitter.com/DougKyed/status/1559574477276684295

New York Giants

Daniel Jones – Daboll is tasked with helping Daniel Jones put it all together as he did with Josh Allen in Buffalo. It’s nice to see Daboll giving his young QB some praise but Daniel Jones will need to show it on the field if he wants to be the starter by the end of the year.

“Brian Daboll asked if Tyrod Taylor will eventually get some 1st-team snaps. Says probably at some point. But goes out of his way to say he has 100% confidence in starter Daniel Jones. Will Tyron’s snaps be a reflection on how DJ has played? “Absolutely not.”

Clear Jones is QB1.”

Injury News

New York Jets

Zach Wilson – Joe Flacco is still expected to start week 1 but this is the best-case scenario for what looked like a potential season-ending injury for the sophomore QB.

“BREAKING: Zach Wilson’s arthroscopic knee surgery was deemed a success, a source tells ESPN. There were no surprises from the original diagnosis. They won’t put him on the field until he’s 100%, but good news for the Jets”

https://twitter.com/RichCimini/status/1559617378874425344

Kansas City Chiefs

JuJu Smith-Schuster – hopefully this is just something minor.

“Chiefs WR JuJu Smith-Schuster didn’t practice Tuesday due to a sore knee.”

https://twitter.com/mattderrick/status/1559578267555975169

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Chris Godwin – more good news from Chris Godwin as he works his way back from his torn ACL injury.

“Another small but significant step for Bucs receiver Chris Godwin, who has ramped up from individual drills to 7-on-7 work in the last two days of practice. Slow, careful progress as he returns from knee surgery.”

https://twitter.com/gregauman/status/1559555886598717442

New England Patriots

Hunter Henry – not sure if this is anything serious but Hunter Henry left practice early today.

“Devin Asiasi’s hands have been shaky lately. Had a drop the other day and just fumbled in 7-on-7s. Seeing a lot of run today with Hunter Henry leaving practice early.”

https://twitter.com/ZackCoxNESN/status/1559554067185156097

“Hunter Henry looks like he’s left practice. Devin Asiasi is up with the starting offense in 12 personnel packages.”

https://twitter.com/_AndrewCallahan/status/1559550716603240450

Los Angeles Rams

Matthew Stafford – Stafford has been a hot topic this summer with his elbow being the point of contention. McVay seems to not be too concerned as they plan for him to ramp up in the coming days.

“We’re going to really ramp him up,” McVay said.

https://twitter.com/LATimesklein/status/1559554641821462528

Philadelphia Eagles

Miles Sanders

“Looks like no practice for Miles Sanders today.”

https://twitter.com/EliotShorrParks/status/1559543033145835521

Baltimore Ravens

JK Dobbins

“Dobbins was activated off the PUP list last week & was on the field for 2 practices. He was then held out of the practices over the weekend & Harbaugh said he was in the ‘evaluation’ period. He looked more comfortable Monday running & going through drills than he did last week.”
