Training Camp Notes 8-10-2022

August 7, 2023

Stock up

Chicago Bears

Justin Fields – it’s nice to see a good report on Fields but this offense is far from “perfect” with the offense lacking weapons.

“Today was a very good day for Justin Fields at Bears camp. There were multiple throws that I would say were ‘perfect’”

Carolina Panthers

Baker Mayfield – the writing is on the wall for Baker to be the starting QB for the Panthers this year.

“Baker Mayfield vs. Sam Darnold, Day 11: Over the past three practices, Mayfield has established himself as the clear QB1. Tuesday’s session was another example of how far he’s come in just three weeks.”

“From my observations, there is absolutely no doubt Baker Mayfield will open the regular season as the Panthers starting quarterback (barring any unforeseen injuries). Frankly, he’s just looked better than Sam Darnold at training camp.”

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Julio Jones – this is a crowded WR room with Godwin avoiding the PUP list, but it looks like Julio may have some juice left after all.

“Playoff Lenny is asked which teammate has especially stood out and picked things up: ‘Julio, definitely.’”

Chicago Bears

Khalil Herbert – the new regime didn’t draft Herbert or Montgomery, so it’ll be interesting to see how much work both backs get this year.

“It’s been over a year but I’m still ultra impressed with Khalil Herbert’s vision and patience. Tends to lead to good things.”

New Orleans Saints

Michael Thomas – Michael Thomas has been on absolute fire at Saints camp. He hasn’t played football in over a year, but all signs are pointing to him being fully back.

“Michael Thomas in the past 10 minutes…4 receptions, 4 TDs”

One of the Michael Thomas TDs from today ->

Buffalo Bills

Gabriel Davis – Gabe Davis looks poised to build off his playoff performance from last year.

“Gabe Davis has been really impressive at training camp. His best camp so far. He looks like the ‘top-25 wide receiver’ the Bills believe he can be for this offense.”

San Francisco 49ers

Trey Lance – Lance has had an up and down camp so far, but the latest updates are positive. He’s got a ton of rushing upside this year so even if the passing game is average, he should be a smash at ADP.

“Trey Lance continues to look more comfortable when it’s a game-situation. Move-the-ball period to end practice was his best part yet.”

“Trey Lance’s best throw of the day was a beautifully placed 17-out to Brandon Aiyuk with Ambry Thomas close in coverage. Lance threw the pass with anticipation and on the money, as Aiyuk got two feet inbounds on a nice play.”

“Had QB Trey Lance at 9-of-19 today. Again some good and bad. He missed a couple of short throws on screens that might have gone for big gains, including one to Aiyuk. Had a deep ball to Deebo that just missed early. Also what appeared to be a couple of miscommunications.”

San Francisco 49ers

Trey Sermon – Undertaker.gif. There’s been a competition for who the RB2 will be behind Elijah Mitchell, and it seems as if Trey Sermon is working his way out of the doghouse that he found himself in last year.

“Terrific practice today by Trey … Sermon. The RB has broken off some big runs and catch-and-runs. No practice today for Elijah Mitchell.”

“A busy day for RB Trey Sermon, who was very involved in the offense with Mitchell not participating. Expecting that might be a tune up for Sermon to get plenty of work against the Packers on Friday. Sermon had some solid runs and also made some plays out of the backfield.”

Pittsburgh Steelers

George Pickens continues to rip through his first Training Camp.

“George Pickens said that the catch he made today during the two-minute drill is probably the best he’s had here in camp, but probably the 8th best of his life.   If there are seven better catches than that, holy moly.”

“Holy shit. George Pickens.”

Quick Hits

– Zach Wilson no look pass to Elijah Moore->

– One of the Michael ThomasTDs from today ->

Ja’Marr Chaseone handed grab ->

Tom Brady to Julio Jones in the Dolphins/Bucs joint practice ->

Davis Mills to Brandin Cooks->

Stock down

Pittsburgh Steelers

Mitch Trubisky – Mitch seems to have the inside track to start for the Steelers this year, but his leash will be awfully short and he’s been subpar in camp.

“Trubisky not having a banner day so far. Pass under pressure team period he underthrows Anthony Miller on a deep route. Next play he goes to throw the ball and the ball slips out of the back of his hands.”

“Mitch Trubisky almost picked on back to back seven shot drills other two reps were incomplete. 0-4. Awful reps”

Indianapolis Colts

Inexperience behind Michael Pittman in the receiving group has led to some inconsistency and drops.

Baltimore Ravens

Isaiah Likely – Likely is more of a dynasty target with Mark Andrews ahead of him on the depth chart but this is good news for the rookie who is impressing in camp.

“John Harbaugh on rookie TE Isaiah Likely: ‘He’s going to be a big part of the offense this year.’”

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Rachaad White – Fournette will be the bell cow, but White has some immense upside should Lenny miss some games.

“Fournette told Rachaad White ‘take no shit’ today as he saw his first NFL action against another team. Says he knows the defenses like to hit the rookies a little harder. Called White “crazy” and feels like they have a little brother/big brother relationship going on.”

New England Patriots

Pierre Strong – with James White still on the PUP list, the rookie has a chance to get himself involved in the rotation at RB for the Patriots.

“’A little bit behind’ but now healthy, rookie Pierre Strong looks like a player on the rise in the Patriots’ backfield.”

Injury News

Denver Broncos

Melvin Gordon – this injury doesn’t sound too serious but keep tabs because if there was a long-term injury to Gordon it would rocket Javonte Williams even higher up draft boards.

“Nathaniel Hackett said Melvin Gordon III has a foot injury and they’re managing it. He didn’t practice today.”

Indianapolis Colts

Parris Campbell – it’s nice to see Campbell back out there practicing. He’s had a great camp so far but let’s hope he can put together his first healthy season ever.

“Parris Campbell is doing 11-on-11’s after sitting out 1-on-1’s. He’d be listed as limited if this were a normal practice. But he’s moving fine by my amateur eyes.”

Denver Broncos

Courtland Sutton – Sutton tweaked his ankle the other day, so it is good news to see him back out there practicing today.

“Good news: Courtland Sutton is participating in practice.”

Pittsburgh Steelers

Chase Claypool – monitoring

“Should mention Chase Claypool hasn’t been out here today. Not sure the reason.”

Los Angeles Rams

Van Jefferson

“Looks like Van Jefferson is gonna do some light rehab work to the side of practice today.”

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Russell Gage

“Bucs wide receiver Russell Gage just pulled up during one-on-ones and is grabbing his leg.”

“Buccaneers WR Russell Gage’s leg injury considered minor.”

Cleveland Browns

Jakeem Grant – confirms the bad news from yesterday. Grant wasn’t going to be fantasy relevant this year, but this is a blow to the Browns special teams and potential WR depth.

“Browns WR Jakeem Grant is confirmed to have torn his Achilles yesterday in practice. He will be placed on IR, sidelining him for the season.”

Baltimore Ravens

Gus Edwards

“On Gus Edwards: ‘Gus is doing really well. He’s kind of a patient rehab guy. I don’t know that he’ll be the first week, but before the season’s over I think he’s going to be roaring and ready to go.’”
