Bill Simmons’ “My Guy” Lists Completed By Our Staff

August 31, 2022

In honor of Bill Simmons “My Guy” podcast episode with Danny Kelly, Craig Horlbeck and Danny Heifetz the staff at 32Beatwriters.com decided to make our own lists and give a bit of insight on to why we choose a specific selection. This was honestly a pretty fun list to come up with and jogged one of the first conversations (and debates) we’ve had since starting the site.

Zach’s Pick – ‘I want everyone on that offense’ Guy: Gabe Davis

I almost put Davis in the “One True Love” spot, but ARSB barely gets the nod there.  I don’t know if there’s anyone higher on Gabe Davis than me.  He has legit top 12 wide receiver upside, mainly because of the offense he plays on.  Or maybe I’m still daydreaming about his 4 touchdown performance in last season’s playoffs.  By all accounts this offseason, Davis is poised and ready for a third year breakout.

Joey’s Pick – ‘Someone has to get points on that team’ Guy: Saquon Barkley

Look at the Giants depth chart behind Saquon Barkley and you’ll see names like Matt Breida, Gary Brightwell, and Antonio Williams. This is Saquon’s backfield and it’s not even close. Now look at the Giants wide receivers. Kenny Golladay has looked awful in camp and hasn’t been remotely close to the player he was in Detroit. Sterling Shepard is coming back from an Achilles injury. Kadarius Toney has, while insanely talented, has all sorts of issues that worry me. Darius Slayton is in the doghouse and could be traded or cut. Collin Johnson, who had some preseason hype, tore his ACL. Finally, there’s second round rookie Wan’Dale Robinson, who has some minor upside. The Giants hired Brian Daboll to help bring this offense into the modern age. Barring injury, it can’t get any worse than last year. Saquon is now a year removed from his ACL tear and is reportedly back to his old form. A three down bell cow is rare these days, but that’s Saquon Barkley. I’ll take him in the early second round all day long and reap the benefits.

Matt’s Pick – ‘I’ll never root for injury, but he is one injury away’ Guy: Alexander Mattison

Death, taxes and Dalvin Cook never playing a full season the only three guarantees in life. This is no knock on Cook but it’s the reason why I chose Mattison as my one injury away guy. He’s performed every single time (minus one) when Cook has been sidelined. When he plays the majority of snaps at running back he is a fantasy gem finishing as an RB1 80% of the time. Another bonus with Mattison is he can catch and pass protect, making him a potential three down back. His career average of 8.3 yards per a catch isn’t too shabby either. He also gets a bit of a bonus here because if another team has an injury at running back a trade for Mattison could be inevitable as Minnesota has had no talks about extending his contract.

Max’s Pick – ‘I’ll never root for injury, but he is one injury away’ Guy: Javonte Williams

I know it’s natural to select a backup running back here, but I’m going with Williams. He has overall RB1 potential should Melvin Gordon endure a high sprain to his ankle. He would have the three major keys to a successful fantasy season: High scoring offense, high touch count, and uber talented.
