8/18 Training Camp Recap

July 7, 2023

8/18 Recap

  • Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy: “Let’s make it clear: Michael Gallup is a No. 1 wide receiver in my view. I think we’re very fortunate to have three players who can play at that level. …He’s primed to take that next step”
  • TY Hilton has looked in midseason form less than a week after being removed from the non-football injury list because of a slight hamstring injury he suffered during offseason training.
  • Joe Haden praised Chase Claypool with an unprompted tweet
  • “It appeared to me — especially later in practice on some deep balls — that Roethlisberger was short-arming his passes. It was sort of like a whip action. It reminded me a bit of Philip Rivers’ delivery.”
  • Alex Smith is back at practice and automatically deserves the Comeback Player of the Year award just for that. And he looked good! He had nice zip on the ball and good accuracy.
  • Dwayne Haskins mainly worked as the first team TD, but the QB reps were fairly even.
  • Steven Sims is currently a starting WR for Washington. He had an impressive showing in 7v7 today.
  • Buc’s offense had a so-so day, but picked up the pace towards the end of practice.
  • Miles Sanders has been working more from the slot as the Eagles try to move him all over the field.
  • Denzel Mims sat out again.
  • No knee brace for Bryce Love.
  • Logan Thomas seems to be the starting TE for Washington and had a good practice with several nice catches.
  • Carson Wentz on Jalen Reagor: “A lot of fun. He is an explosive athlete. They want to grow and they want to be great. I see that in him and I see an extremely bright future with him. And I’m excited to help him become the player he dreams of being”
  • AJ Green sat out practice. He had a minor hamstring tweak yesterday, but he was also planned to have the day off today anyways.
  • “If you can’t protect, if you’re getting your ass knocked back,” Bruce Arians said of running backs. Important note for rookie Ke’Shawn Vaughn.
  • Mohamed Sanu’s route running continues to stand out head and shoulders above the rest of the #Patriots wideouts.
  • Keenan Allen was complimentary of the two rookie WRs. He called Joe Reed “very explosive” and said K.J. Hill has “been a technician so far.”
  • Both Michael Pittman Jr and Jonathan Taylor got reps with the first-team offense this morning. And both made plays. JT especially had a strong practice.
  • D’Andre Swift destroyed linebackers in 1-on-1 drills. He also showcased his pass catching ability. He had a great practice as Kerryone Johnson sat out.
  • John Harbaugh on Lamar Jackson: “He’s been very consistent and focused on improving.”
  • Phillip Rivers targeted the RBs heavily in the pass game.
  • Another day, another nice catch by Laviska Shenault.
  • WR Scotty Miller on working with QB Tom Brady: “I think we meshed well together right away and I’m just trying to learn as much as I can from him … I think if I’m on the same page as him, I’ll be in a good spot.”
  • Bengals WRs running with the 1s during 11-on-11: Auden Tate, Mike Thomas, Tyler Boyd (AJG sat out).
  • Devin Duvernay stood out at Ravens practice.
  • Lamar Jackson had one of his best training camp practices as a Raven today. Unofficially, he went 24-for-32 over 7-on-7, 11-on-11 and 1-on-1 drills. Miles Boykin, Devin Duvernay and Willie Snead all had strong days out wide.
  • Todd Gurley had a “load management” off day
  • Eagles rookie WR Quez Watkins is having a good start to camp.
  • RB Damien Harris made a one-handed catch of a Cam Newton throw late in practice. LB Josh Uche was closest in coverage. If Harris can become a contributor as a pass-catcher, it could give him an edge in competition for early-down reps.
  • Jalen Hurts continues to get a lot of work, especially in RZ. Eagles are putting him on the move often.
  • Frank Reich talking about Jonathan Taylor’s vision: It’s very evident for us watching him; he’s moving vertically through the hole and then suddenly slide steps into space.
  • Drew Lock continues to show improved foot work.
  • Really impressed by Quintez Cephus today. Had some good battles with Okudah, caught a TD during 11-on-11s. He’s meticulous in his routes so he can take a second to uncover, but he keeps finding space.
  • Albert Okwuegbunam had a strong day in the Red Zone.
  • Zac Taylor said Drew Sample has had a strong offseason. Said he was pleased with the 2019 second-round pick before he went on IR last year.
  • Corey Davis is back at practice and had a nice one-handed grab.
  • Don’t sleep on Zack Moss in the receiving game.
  • Garoppolo says that Brandon Aiyuk and Jerick McKinnon both see the field like quarterbacks, so he’s on the same page as them. “They find the soft spot and go get YAC after.”
  • Josh Rosen has been much improved, so far outplaying Tua.
  • First rep of 1v1s at Seahawks practice: Russell Wilson 40-yard TD to DK Metcalf down the left sideline. Tre Flowers had decent coverage on the play, but Metcalf got a step, stacked him and Wilson delivered a dime over DK’s right shoulder. Metcalf is poised for a huge season.
