8/14 Lunch Time Update

July 7, 2023

8/14/2020 Update:

  • Bill Belichick said Patriots rookies are in “deep water. Turbulent water. And it’s going to get rougher”. Probably safe to temper all expectations for Pats rookies. He did say he’s pleased with their effort.
  • Titans TE coach expressed optimism about using Jonnu Smith creatively and finding ways to get him touches.
  • Pete Carroll said “DeeJay Dallas has made a really good first impression. He’s very versatile, he catches the ball well, he runs well, runs routes real well – has a background of running routes as a receiver, has a quarterback background going back to high school. He’s got a real versatility to him, so I’m anxious to see what he can do.” Dallas should have several opportunities to show his skill set with Chris Carson away from camp for personal matters and Rashaad Penny on the PUP list.
  • Bears rookie, Darnell Mooney, worked out with Allen Robinson over the summer. A-Rob said “I think he can be a great asset to our team. … He has a great grasp of the offense. He’s coming along really fast.” Ted Ginn is the presumed starter opposite A-Rob, but Mooney could push him for snaps. Both bring the speed element.
  • Laviska Shenault has looked the part in WR drills for Jaguars. The rookie is moving really well for his size and has shown good hands.
  • Denzel Mims sat out practice due to a hamstring injury he suffered a few days ago running routes against air.
  • Le’Veon Bell says he’s in the best shape of his career (we know, training camp cliche). He looks “frisky” with good burst on outside runs.
  • Ceedee Lamb didn’t waste time in making his first “wow” catch of training camp. He reeled in a Dak Prescott pass with his left hand before completing the catch with his right. Lamb was “strikingly graceful and smooth with his every movement.”
  • Dak Prescott was 11 of 17 in team and 7 on 7 with drops by Blake Bell and Blake Jarwin and an interception
  • The first Chiefs practice period in full team drills was centered on the run with Clyde Edwards-Helaire first in line as the featured back.
  • Jerick McKinnon has apparently “looked phenomenal.”
  • Tim Patrick and Jake Butt have become forgotten men with everything the Broncos have added at the skill positions over the last couple years, but don’t completely bury them just yet.
  • Jerry Jeudy has looked as advertised, but KJ Hamler had the catch of the day during Broncos practice.
  • Melvin Gordon also looks good. Drew Lock looked Courtland Sutton’s way early and often.
  • Noah Fant had a good day. He’s up to 255 pounds, but feels just as fast. He’s excited about the additions at WR as it should open things up for him in the middle.
  • Titans rookie RB Darrynton Evans has flashed explosiveness.
  • Raiders TE Foster Moreau was targeted heavily in Red Zone drills. He caught 7 of 7 targets, with 5 TDs.
  • Did you know that Henry Ruggs is fast?
  • Dalvin Cook said he’ll be on the field “full-go” in pads on Monday, with or without a contract. He thinks he could catch 75 balls this year.
